Former Scout Dick Glock Passes Away

Dick Glock, the former scout who famously discovered Yankees icon Derek Jeter, died on Wednesday in Port Huron, Michigan. He was 84.

The Yankees honored Glock with a moment of silence before Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Red Sox, as his family confirmed the news to MLB.com.

Glock played a crucial role in the Yankees selecting Jeter as the sixth overall pick in the 1992 draft. He boldly told scouting director Bill Livesey, “he won’t go” and declared, “the only place Derek Jeter goes is Cooperstown.” This statement turned out to be extremely accurate given Jeter’s illustrious career, which included four World Series titles and his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021.

During his two decades on the field, Jeter achieved a batting average of .310, accumulating 3,465 hits and hitting 260 home runs.

Glock’s coaching journey began as a high school coach and teacher before he took a position at St. Clair Community College, where he coached baseball, basketball, and cross-country. He earned the Junior College Coach of the Year award three times, in 1970, 1972, and 1976.

As a scout, Glock worked not only with the Yankees but also had experience with the Montreal Expos and remained with the Yankees until 2002.

His impact on the scouting community was significant. Giants general manager Zach Minasian, Brewers assistant GM Carl Mueller, and Angels scouting director Derek Watson are just a few who benefited from Glock’s expertise while they were in Milwaukee.

“Sure, he gets the credit for Jeter, and rightly so, but I appreciated Dick for sparking great discussions during meetings,” said former Brewers GM Doug Melvin. “He wasn’t one to sit back and agree with everyone. He encouraged you to present your argument, making sure your stance was well thought out.”
