Dick Van Dyke at 99: Still Going Strong
At 99 years old, Dick Van Dyke continues to defy expectations. Recently, while filming for “Men’s Health,” musician Rick Springfield encountered the legendary entertainer at the gym, which turned out to be quite a surprise.
Springfield shared on Instagram, “I went to the gym and who should be there but 99-year-old Dick Van Dyke, working out on all the machines. Dick has lived in Malibu for about 30 years and is a wonderful person.” It’s impressive, isn’t it? The energy this icon exudes is something to marvel at.
Health Struggles and Public Appearances
Despite his age, Van Dyke recently missed a comedic fundraising event that he was supposed to attend. His wife, Arlene Silver, informed the audience, “When you’re 99 and a half, you have good days and bad days. Unfortunately, today is not a good day for him. He’s tired of not being here.” It’s kind of heartbreaking to see someone so vibrant held back by health challenges.
Springfield was particularly struck by Van Dyke’s commitment to fitness. He remarked, “I thought I was doing well at 76,” which is a fair point. It’s all about keeping active, I guess.
They posed for a playful shot where Springfield was down on one knee in a mock boxing stance while Van Dyke, sitting on a weight machine, mirrored that lively spirit.
A Bit of Background
Earlier this year, Van Dyke had to skip an event named after him aimed at benefiting the Malibu community. It should have been a big thing for him, but health issues can sometimes throw a wrench in the plans of even the most seemingly unstoppable individuals.
As for Springfield, he’s also navigating his share of health issues, which stem from an unfortunate incident years ago. “I fell 25 feet and smashed my head—but I thought I just broke my wrist,” he explained about the concert collapse that led to lasting complications. I mean, that’s a scary experience, and it’s a little surprising to hear how much damage can come from something that seemed minor at the time.
Both icons seem to be grappling with their individual health backgrounds yet continue to show up in life as best they can. It’s a reminder that age brings unpredictability, but it doesn’t have to dim the spark of joy and connection.
