First Elimination on Great British Baking Show Season 13: A Tragic Goodbye
It’s always tough to see a contestant go on Great British Baking Show, but saying farewell to the first Baker eliminated, well, that seems particularly sad. It feels like we barely got to know them. Plus, there’s this nagging thought—were they just a victim of first-week jitters? During the first episode of Season 13, a thought pops into my head…
Did Noel Fielding inadvertently doom Baker Hassan, the first one eliminated of 2025?
**Spoilers for Great British Baking Show Season 13 Episode 1 “Cake Week” streaming on Netflix**
In the opening of Season 13’s “Cake Week,” Noel shows a lot of faith in 30-year-old Hassan, who works as a research scientist from South Yorkshire. He asks Hassan if he thinks he can survive day one. Hassan responds with a self-deprecating joke, suggesting he might just last until “tomorrow.” The humor definitely has a darker edge, considering tomorrow is Show Stopper Day when judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith will assess the contestants’ work.
It’s a light moment, but it stings even more knowing Hassan gets eliminated the very next day. He literally said it—he made it through today, but not beyond.
The production team seemed to have fun with this fate too; they not only captured Hassan’s ominous prediction but also included it in episode highlights, making it more pronounced.
So, was Noel’s playful jab actually a jinx? Was Hassan truly the right pick to go home first? Let’s delve into it.
The Signature Challenge for this season had a classic but tricky twist. Bakers had to whip up Swiss rolls with decorative inlays. They needed to master that delicate sponge roll while also getting creative with the design. Baker Ian from Ireland crafted an intricate version modeled after his school, while Tom from London showcased his family’s tartan pattern. Hassan, on the other hand, produced… well, let’s say it wasn’t his best work.
As he himself confessed, he really was “troubled.” Therefore, he landed at or near the bottom of the Signature Challenge rankings.
Then came one of the more difficult technical challenges we’ve seen: each Baker had to create nine identical fondant fantasies. Sounds hard, right? It got tougher when Paul Hollywood flashed an example that was full-on artistic, paired with a wild mix of potentially confusing ingredients. Not surprisingly, everyone struggled, and when the winner was announced, Paul even shouted, “Don’t applaud!”
Hassan ranked tenth out of twelve, which isn’t promising for someone who might just be jinxed.
But poor performances don’t seal a contestant’s fate on Great British Baking Show. There’s always the chance to pivot during the Show Stopper round.
For the first Show Stopper of the season, contestants were tasked with making a “landscape cake.” Natalia, the first star baker, created a beautiful rendition of the war-torn geography of Ukraine, complete with a lovely heart marking Kiev. It was stunning and delicious.
Hassan’s pumpkin cake, with a bamboo garden theme, however, was hilariously compared to a “bad” dream by Paul Hollywood.
Other bakers like Toby and Layton faced their own challenges, but Hassan had the unfortunate luck of three subpar performances. Even if the technical accolades went to Toby, Hassan was still left wanting.
So, yes, on paper, Hassan’s elimination makes sense. The likable “yoga lover” stumbled through all three challenges during “Cake Week,” pointing to an early departure.
Still, I can’t shake the feeling that Noel’s lighthearted quip may have played a role. Maybe it was just a random joke, but I can’t help but ponder whether it set off a self-fulfilling prophecy, echoing Hassan’s own worries. Or maybe it was merely coincidence.
Either way, I hope Noel asks the next Baker how long they think they’ll last in the tent!
