The pivotal moment for President Trump as a peace advocate is set for early Friday at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Trump has been quite open about wanting to win the award.
“In just seven months, I’ve ended seven ‘endless’ wars,” he asserted during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last month. “No president or prime minister has achieved anything like this.”
On Thursday, he updated the count to eight, citing the recent Gaza ceasefire.
Here’s a quick look at the seven conflicts and an assessment of Trump’s actual contributions toward their resolution.
Israel vs Iran
Trump undeniably played a role in ending the clashes between Israel and Iran, although the broader situation in the region is still tense and Iran’s nuclear ambitions persist, even after U.S. military actions have diminished some of its capabilities.
The two nations had been exchanging isolated assaults for months, but the conflict intensified on June 13 when Israel targeted Iranian military and nuclear sites. Then, on June 22, Trump supported Israel’s actions, which led to Iranian retaliation. Following this, he called for a ceasefire after attacks against a U.S. base in Qatar.
Just two days later, he declared a ceasefire on social media, stating that Israel would redirect its military focus away from Iran.
It’s worth noting that others in his administration also contributed to peacemaking efforts.
While he pressured Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, the U.S. also engaged Qatar to persuade Iran towards a ceasefire, as reported.
India vs. Pakistan
The ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan remain debated regarding whether Trump deserves credit for the ceasefire. That said, his administration indeed facilitated crucial negotiations.
A flare-up occurred in May over the highly contested Kashmir region, which involved missile strikes and casualties on both sides.
The fighting surprisingly ended on May 10, with Trump announcing a ceasefire just before either government stepped forward.
Senior fellow Ashley J. Tellis noted that Trump’s involvement in mediating communications played a role in de-escalating the situation.
However, India hasn’t publicly recognized Trump’s efforts, and there’s been ongoing friction around trade. Conversely, Pakistan praised him, even nominating him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Democratic Republic of Congo vs Rwanda
Despite Trump’s claims, fighting between rival militias in eastern Congo, supported by Rwanda, still continues. This conflict traces back to the 1994 Rwandan genocide and has caused immense suffering.
Peace talks involving militias are underway, but the U.S. is also involved in a separate process between the two countries to address their tensions.
Bintu Keita from the UN noted that while peace talks exist, violence remains rampant, with atrocities reported.
Some observers believe the peace efforts initiated by Trump have not mitigated the ongoing violence adequately.
Cambodia vs Thailand
It’s generally accepted that Trump had a significant hand in resolving recent border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand. The uproar commenced in late July and ceased after Trump warned of trade deal repercussions.
Ultimately, a ceasefire was agreed upon in Malaysia, but mutual accusations of violations persist.
While Trump played a central role initially, it remains uncertain if his administration will foster ongoing negotiations to ensure lasting peace.
Egypt vs Ethiopia
Disagreements over the Nile River have long troubled Egypt and Ethiopia, yet Trump’s claims of ending hostilities appear exaggerated, as no actual conflict has arisen.
The dispute primarily revolves around Ethiopia’s construction of a significant hydroelectric dam.
Experts argue that Trump’s earlier interventions may have worsened tensions rather than resolved them, particularly with controversial statements made in 2020 about possible military actions.
Armenia vs Azerbaijan
While various nations attempted unsuccessfully to mediate a resolution between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump managed to bring them to the discussion table, although a final agreement remains incomplete.
In Washington, leaders from both nations acknowledged Trump’s role during peace framework discussions in August.
Despite ongoing skirmishes and a recent military offensive leading to a significant refugee situation, some analysts suggest the talks prevent an imminent major conflict.
Serbia vs Kosovo
Trump helped initiate an economic agreement in 2020 that paved the way for improved relations between Kosovo and Serbia, even though they weren’t exactly at war beforehand.
Nonetheless, tensions have escalated in recent years over Kosovo’s independence not being recognized by Serbia.
While the U.S. had facilitated discussions, both nations are still pursuing further negotiations independently, leaving many details unresolved.
Overall, some observers believe that Trump’s earlier actions were beneficial in avoiding further conflict, providing a framework for diplomacy rather than warfare.
