Dimon cautions about credit problems after Tricolor and First Brands bankruptcies

Concerns About Hidden Credit Risks in the Economy

Gerald Cassidy, the managing director at RBC Capital Markets, recently discussed Jamie Dimon’s “cockroach” theory regarding recent automotive bankruptcies during an appearance on “The Craman Countdown.” Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, issued a warning this week about potential credit risks lingering in the economy. He remarked, “If you see one cockroach, there are probably more.”

During the bank’s quarterly earnings call, Dimon noted that JPMorgan had to address a significant loss of $170 million due to the bankruptcy of Tricolor, a subprime auto lender and dealer, in the third quarter. He also highlighted the bankruptcy of First Brands, a manufacturer of auto parts, as an indication that other credit issues might be on the horizon.

“If you see one cockroach, there’s probably more, so it’s wise to be cautious,” Dimon stated. “I would categorize First Brands in the same boat. There are other companies also in this situation. We keep an eye on these developments, but we aren’t infallible. We make mistakes too.”

Dimon went on to explain that the credit market has largely remained stable since 2010, but signs are emerging that could suggest a future oversupply. He suggested that if a recession occurs, it could trigger an increase in credit challenges.

He also mentioned that JPMorgan is reevaluating its management strategies following the Tricolor bankruptcy, admitting that the $170 million loss was “not our finest moment.” “When something like this happens, we meticulously examine every detail to prevent it from recurring,” he added.

The First Brands situation is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Board of Trustees overseeing bankruptcy matters has indicated there are grounds to suspect potential fraud or misconduct by members of the debtor’s board of directors or management during the company’s operations.

Overall, it is clear that while managing a large financial institution can come with unpredictable challenges, understanding these dynamics is key to navigating potential market risks down the road.
