china Ding Liren Defending world chess championship against rapidly growing Indian teenager Gukesh Donmaraju. The best-of-14 matches will be held at Singapore's Resorts World Sentosa from November 23 to December 15, with a total prize pool of $2.5 million (£1.98 million).

Ding became China's first world men's chess champion by defeating Ian Nepomniachy in Kazakhstan last year to win the title vacated by Norway's Magnus Carlsen, the longtime world No. 1. However, the 32-year-old from Zhejiang province has only played 44 classical matches in the 19 months since winning the world title, while battling personal difficulties including depression. In a defensive battle, you will fight as the underdog.

Gukesh, commonly known as Gukesh D, won the Eight Candidates Tournament in Toronto at the age of 17, topping a stacked field that included Nepomniatchi, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana, earning him the best-ever bid for the World Championship. He became a young challenger and surprised the authorities in chess. . The 18-year-old has a chance to break the record for youngest world champion, held by then-22-year-old Garry Kasparov, who defeated Karpov in a rematch in Moscow in 1985.

format

The match consists of 14 classic games, with each player receiving 1 point for a win and 0.5 points for a draw. The first person to reach 7.5 points will be declared the champion.

The time limit for each game in the classic portion is 120 minutes per side for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the remaining games, increasing by 30 seconds per move from move 41 onwards.

If the score is tied after 14 games, a faster time-controlled tie-break game will be played.

• A match consists of four rapid games of 15 minutes each side, each lasting 10 seconds, starting with move 1. If a player scores 2.5 points or more, that player wins the championship.

• If the scores are still equal, a mini-match of two rapid games takes place. Match duration is 10 minutes per side, starting with the first move and increasing by 5 seconds. If a player scores 1.5 points or more, that player wins the championship. .

• If the score is tied after the rapid part, a mini-match of two blitz games will be played. The time limit is 3 minutes per side, increasing by 2 seconds after the first move. If a player scores 1 1/2 points, or better yet, he will win the championship. A lottery is held before each mini-match to determine which player will play the white piece.

• If the Blitz mini-match is tied, a single blitz game is played with time controls increasing by 3 minutes per side and 2 seconds from move 1 onwards, with the winner taking the championship. A draw determines which player will play with the white pieces. If the match ends in a draw, the Blitz game will be played again using the same time system but with the colors reversed, and the winner will be crowned champion. This process repeats until one player wins the game.

Players cannot agree to a draw before black's 40th move. Earlier draw claims are only allowed if three repetitions or a stalemate occurs.
