Discussion on Controversy Surrounding Abdul El-Sayed

During a segment on CNN’s “Situation Room” on Wednesday, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) addressed the backlash regarding Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s association with Hasan Piker. She expressed her frustrations by stating, “I’m tired of people trying to drag me into it. I strongly disagree with many of the things that Hasan Piker has said.” She emphasized the importance for El-Sayed to clarify his stance on Piker’s comments, saying, “it’s incumbent upon Abdul to make it very clear to people that he doesn’t agree with things that Hasan Piker says.” Dingell added, “I pray we’re not going to see him in Michigan from now until the election,” while reiterating her focus on healthcare issues for her constituents and others across the nation.

Co-host Wolf Blitzer inquired about El-Sayed’s approach to the controversy, especially after Piker’s provocative remarks regarding American Jews. El-Sayed responded by saying that “nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople,” and criticized politicians and commentators for attempting to shift the campaign’s focus toward a Twitch personality. Blitzer asked if Dingell thought El-Sayed managed the situation effectively.

Dingell replied, “Look, I’m going to say this to you: I’m tired of people trying to drag me into it. I strongly disagree with many of the things that Hasan Piker has said, particularly about Israel and, honestly, issues surrounding sexual violence. His comments about rape are simply inexcusable. I’m baffled by his followers and their reasons for supporting him. I mentioned something about generational differences and how they might view him based on his physical appearance. What he’s said is just wrong. What matters in this election, I believe, is reversing the healthcare cuts that have affected millions of Americans, addressing the hunger among children, and the impacts on seniors from the cuts to the SNAP program. We need to elect someone who isn’t going to simply endorse the recent Trump policies we’ve seen. It’s crucial for Abdul to clearly state that he doesn’t agree with Piker’s comments. I sincerely hope we won’t see him in Michigan until the election, but my priority is on restoring healthcare access for the people I represent and across this country.”
