Director Jon Erwin of 'House of David' Wants the Series to Attract Viewers to the Bible

Director Hopes to Deepen Love for the Bible with New Season of David’s House

The director of the popular streaming series David’s House expressed hopes that the show will enhance Christian appreciation for the Bible while also appealing to newcomers, including those who are curious but skeptical. Season 2 of David’s House premieres on October 5th on Prime Video’s Wonder Project Subscription Service, continuing the saga of David as he navigates challenges with Saul and strengthens his bond with Jonathan, who feels almost like a brother.

Irwin refers to David’s tale as a “hero’s journey,” suggesting it resonates with both Christians and non-Christians. This is evident, he notes, as the series ascended to the top spot on Prime Video shortly after its release.

“If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars, I believe that many character archetypes and their stories echo what we see in David’s journey,” he remarked. “David is, in a sense, the original Luke Skywalker.”

As Season 2 begins, it tackles the aftermath of David’s victory over Goliath, while also continuing the romantic subplot from Season 1 involving David and Princess Mikal. Irwin mentioned his desire for the project to not only deepen his own affection for the Bible but to instill that same feeling in viewers.

“For those who share my love for the Bible, I hope this narrative adds more significance and depth,” he shared. “While I have a greater understanding of life than my characters, I believe the series is accessible to everyone—even for those who might not be familiar with biblical stories. It has the same thematic essence as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter.”

Irwin pointed out that Christian entertainment is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, with projects like David’s House and others on the horizon, showcasing a creative revival. He clarified that David’s House is not “just about the Bible,” but rather a “love letter to it.”

“It’s an artistic endeavor meant to resonate with those who appreciate life-altering literature,” he said.
