Wachowski Defends Writer Following Controversial Comments
Director Lily Wachowski, known for her work on the Matrix series, has taken to social media to defend transgender comic writer Gretchen Felker Martin. This comes after the swift cancellation of the Red Hood comic series, which occurred shortly after Felker Martin expressed their approval of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.
In a post, Wachowski criticized D.C. Comics for what she perceives as hypocrisy, stating, “D.C. Comics is over there in the moral high ground, seemingly siding with white nationalists, all while continuing to perpetuate the damage caused by Gretchen Felker Martin’s firing.” This seemed to suggest a disconnect between the company’s stated values and its actions.
Wachowski further remarked, “You’d think the characters in the DC Universe could be a bit more humane.” Her comments reflect a frustration with the current discourse in comic book culture.
Felker Martin’s controversial remarks included a message that appeared to celebrate Kirk’s death, saying, “Thoughts and prayers for your Nazi,” and later adding, “After touching Charlie Kirk, the bullet is fine.” When pressed about her comments, she stood firm, mentioning, “I had no regrets about what I said. Kirk was a terrible person, so it didn’t weigh heavily on me.” She described Kirk’s death as “a very unpleasant thing,” while also acknowledging the broader conversations taking place online about his reputation.
The suspected shooter, a 22-year-old from Utah named Tyler Robinson, has since been taken into police custody. This incident has ignited discussions about the implications of hate speech and the response from both comic book creators and publishers.
