The celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday is moving ahead without oversight from the White House, which has pulled back from the planning after issues with unapproved posts and financial decisions.
Ariel Abelgel, a 25-year-old who previously worked as a producer for Fox News, was dismissed from his role at the bipartisan committee responsible for the anniversary events after being appointed by President Trump.
The Wall Street Journal initially reported on the removal of Trump-related tasks from the committee.
This committee comprises 16 unpaid private citizens, eight lawmakers, and 12 federal employees who act as non-voting members with support from the America250 Foundation.
Key figures on the committee include Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif).
Abelgel’s dismissal was linked to several serious violations, including security breaches of the committee’s social media accounts and misrepresenting his authority to act on behalf of Congressional leaders. He also attempted to raise the resignation of various commissioners.
A spokesperson noted that Abelgel disregarded directives from the executive committee and took steps that jeopardized the committee’s operations and reputation by approving programming, finances, and communications independently.
A Journal source indicated that Abelgel endeavored to steer the theme of events to pay tribute to Trump.
While the foundation has not commented on the matter, Abelgel described the accusations against him as “malicious lies” that detract from the truth.
He asserts that he was fired due to his attempts to honor the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Abelgel made a post without authorization from the America250 account, saying, “America is in mourning. We congratulate Charlie Kirk.”
There has been extensive online discussion regarding the circumstances surrounding Kirk’s death, noted for its connection to GOP advisors and his role as co-founder of Turning Point USA. Trump administration officials have vowed to sanction those promoting political violence.
Following Abelgel’s post, he faced suspension, was asked to resign, and ultimately was terminated.
Despite this, the White House commended Abelgel for his contributions to the committee, particularly for organizing a military parade over the summer.
In a statement, the administration expressed pride in Abelgel’s efforts with America250, especially during the Army 250 parade that honored military personnel.
Officials indicated that the White House task force would continue to collaborate closely with the America250 planning efforts, ensuring that each event leading up to the nation’s 250th birthday is celebrated fittingly.
