Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, expressed his disappointment about his party’s approach to food security during the current government shutdown. He noted that the shutdown is preventing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from reaching those who need them.
Democrats have turned down more than a dozen attempts to reopen the government, facing extreme demands, including a request for $1.5 trillion in new funding for health care reform. Now, as the shutdown stretches into its 29th day, some are reevaluating their strategies.
Fetterman shared his feelings on social media, stating, “As a committed Democrat, I am disappointed that my party is toying with food security for 42 million Americans.” He emphasized his rejection of political strategies that jeopardize the well-being of vulnerable citizens.
This isn’t the first time he has raised this issue. He previously mentioned it on October 22, asserting that a government shutdown means that “America loses.” He pointed out that two million residents in Pennsylvania depend on SNAP for their nutrition, arguing that it’s a matter of prioritizing the needs of constituents over party agendas.
As November draws near, the implications of the shutdown are becoming more apparent. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a warning about an impending expiration of benefits.
Senate Democrats have attempted to defund the SNAP program 12 times, leading to a shortage of funds. They face pressure to either support essential programs for families or continue funding other initiatives.
Senate Republicans have echoed this concern. They highlighted that Democrats have blocked SNAP assistance 13 times, indicating that by the upcoming weekend, funds will run completely dry, leaving many families without food. They criticized the political motivations behind these actions.
Rep. Katherine Clark, a prominent Democrat, acknowledged the troubling nature of the shutdown, asserting that families would pay the price, but felt it was crucial to take a firm stance during this challenging political moment.
