On April 28th, while exploring Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, I stepped into the hotel lobby and was informed that a power outage affected all of Portugal and Spain. I initially thought there must be some sort of misunderstanding, but it turned out to be true—there was no electricity anywhere in Portugal. To gather more information, we decided to head back to our hotel via Uber, where the drivers shared their insights on the situation.
Thousands of train travelers found themselves stranded in both Spain and Portugal as the rail services ceased operations. Additionally, the power cuts disrupted telecommunications, leaving many unable to use their mobile phones, access the internet, or even manage online banking.
As we drove, we noticed traffic lights were completely dark, and the gas pumps were out of service. Businesses had closed down, and without card payments, people resorted to withdrawing cash. Many were abandoning their offices, uncertain when the next bus would arrive. Lisbon Airport had also shut down.
In the midst of chaos, millions struggled to find assistance or even communicate about their troubles. Panic buying ensued as locals and tourists rushed to stock up on food, supplies, and gas, leading to long lines and empty shelves. Concerns were rampant about essentials like food, water, and cash, especially considering the blackout might last several days.
It was all pretty bewildering. Without working phones, information was scarce. Rumors spread wildly—some believed it was a cyber attack, while others thought it might involve a foreign power or a mishap at a power plant. No one really knew for sure.
Luckily, our hotel had a generator, so we still had some power. When we ventured out for dinner, our choices were limited to salads and charred meat, while desserts were melting fast. We felt fortunate to have something to eat, as many restaurants were closed.
Initially, reports suggested that Spain might restore electricity in 10-12 hours, while Portugal’s restoration could take up to a week. Thankfully, power was restored in both countries within approximately 10-14 hours, and by the next morning, life was almost back to normal for more than 59 million people.
Reflecting on the event, I couldn’t help but think about the power of faith. There are instances when we try to bear our burdens alone, and we tend to forget that there’s greater support out there. Sometimes, we forget about resting in that power rather than laboring under our own limited strength. It’s easy to get wrapped up in worries and forget to rely on something bigger.
God aims for us to embrace boundless power, rather than just relying on our limited resources. It often requires a shift in perspective, allowing us to step back, stop the frantic planning, and simply trust that there’s help out there.
It’s fascinating how unforeseen events can lead to miraculous changes. In many cases, we may feel trapped in situations where solutions seem impossible. Yet, with faith, what seems unattainable can become achievable. I’ve personally witnessed such transformations, reminding me that the power of faith can indeed shift outcomes dramatically.
Over the years, I’ve seen it too many times to count—like when my stepfather struggled with alcoholism. After seeking divine help, he found the strength to quit drinking for over 40 years. Another instance was a woman who prayed for healing from a tumor. After we prayed, her medical scans showed her tumor had vanished, contradicting what doctors had previously diagnosed.
The same power is available to anyone today. As we become receptive, remarkable things can happen through faith. It’s interesting how God’s strength can dismantle obstacles, opening new pathways that seem beyond reach.
When you find yourself in need, leaning into faith can work wonders. Trust that there is a strength larger than your own waiting to support you.
