U.S. and Israel Discuss Post-War Gaza Plans

Officials from the United States and Israel gathered in Washington, D.C., to talk about the future of Gaza following ongoing conflict, as President Donald Trump expressed optimism for a “conclusive ending” soon.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar focused on several topics. These included joint operations against Iran, strategies for ending the war in Gaza, preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, and the situations in Lebanon and Syria.

This meeting follows strong international criticism of an Israeli military strike on Nassar Hospital in southern Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed the strike was aimed at a Hamas observation camera. However, the attack resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals, including emergency responders and journalists, with IDF stating that six were Hamas members.

Despite the backlash, the State Department maintained that Rubio stressed the U.S.’s “unwavering commitment to Israel’s security” during discussions.

“The secretary and Foreign Minister Saar agreed that continued close cooperation between their countries is vital to the security and prosperity of the region,” stated the State Department.

The Israeli Embassy indicated that the conversation also covered challenges and opportunities in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing nuclear threat posed by Iran and strategies to counter anti-Israel actions internationally.

While President Trump suggests a resolution to the war may be imminent, an Israeli military spokesperson noted that “the evacuation of Gaza City is inevitable,” with plans for a new offensive aimed at militarily occupying all of Gaza and eliminating Hamas forces to recover hostages.

Additionally, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff disclosed that Trump intends to oversee another meeting about a comprehensive post-war strategy for Gaza.

Witkoff emphasized that the U.S. position aligns with Israel’s demands for the release of all remaining hostages, tying this to any peace negotiations.

“That’s the official position, and that’s President Trump’s official position. He hasn’t wavered on wanting to negotiate a future for Gaza once the conflict ends,” Witkoff shared in an interview.

When asked if the White House was setting any “red lines” regarding Israel’s military actions, especially concerning the hospital strike, Witkoff reflected on the tragedy of civilian casualties.

“Any time you have civilian deaths, it’s a tragedy. The president feels that deeply,” he remarked.

“But it’s war, and our goal is to bring this to a close and prevent further loss of life,” he added.

Witkoff also expressed confidence that the situation would reach a resolution, potentially before the year concludes.

There’s some uncertainty regarding how Trump’s proposed comprehensive plan for peace in Gaza aligns with Israel’s decision to intensify military operations in Gaza City.
