Teacher Charged with Multiple Sexual Offences Appears in Court

This week, a teacher from a Chicago suburb faced court charges involving 55 sexual offences and was noted in the high school yearbook where she taught.

Christina Planela’s headshot, alongside her photo as a coach for youth soccer teams, can be seen in the newly released Downers Grove South High School 2024-25 Yearbook.

Planela was originally arrested in March on three counts of statutory rape involving a teenage student. On Tuesday, prosecutors in DuPage County Circuit Court escalated the case, bringing forth numerous additional charges against the 30-year-old teacher.

Overall, she is facing 55 charges, including aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal abuse, and grooming. Authorities indicated that she began grooming the boy when he was only 14 years old.

If convicted, Planela could face a maximum prison sentence of 60 years.

On Tuesday, she also surrendered her teaching license, according to documents from the Illinois Board of Education.

Her husband Michael, whom she married last August, was present in court supporting her throughout the proceedings.

Investigators allege that as a special education teacher, Planela engaged in sexual interactions with the student at least 45 times within the school environment. Prosecutors stated that the inappropriate behavior also occurred five times in her home during school hours.

The relationship reportedly started in January 2023 and continued until September 2024, according to the prosecution, who emphasized that the boy was manipulated.

Concerned about unusual text messages on his mobile phone, the boy’s mother is said to have discovered the troubling situation.

The teenager has denied any wrongdoing from Planela and claimed that her accusations stemmed from his threats, alleging that she was targeted for her appearance.

As of Tuesday, she was charged with no offenses related to those claims.

A spokesperson for the school noted that the yearbook had already begun printing in March prior to her arrest.

Planela remains out on bail but is required to wear an ankle monitor.

Throughout this year, many educators and school staff members have been charged with similar sexual offences involving students.
