Disney CEO Bob Iger denies company is ‘infusing’ messaging

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has denied that the organization pushes any particular message into its content, saying it is focused on providing entertainment first. insisted.

Appeared on CNBC “”cry on the street”, Iger was asked about the company’s woke ideology, and host David Faber claimed that Iger was told he wanted to “get out of the culture wars.”

“Do you think it’s successful?” Faber asked.

“I think the noise has died down a lot,” Iger said. “I preached this at my company before I left and for a long time since I came back. Our number one goal is to entertain.”

The CEO said he doesn’t believe the commonly used term “woke” is fully understood by many viewers, adding that the company’s top priority is entertainment.

“The bottom line is, in our movies and TV shows, injecting a message as a kind of overriding priority is not what we’re trying to do. They have to be funny. Disney It’s great to be accepting and understanding of all types of people where the company can have a positive impact on the world. But generally speaking, we need to be an entertainment-first company. there is.”

When asked how he has tried to foster such an environment, Iger said he works with company executives and creators to influence a return to roots and adjust priorities. He said he was there.

Iger said the company is trying to reach a “diverse audience” and that certain viewers may be “turned off by certain things.” He added that Disney needs to be more sensitive to the interests of a broader audience.

Iger was also asked about Elon Musk “constantly chasing him,” but the CEO dodged the question.

“I ignore it…There is no connection to the Walt Disney Company or to me…People have been going after me and the company for years.”

The executive asked whether facing the possibility of Donald Trump becoming president again, that would change his approach to “anti-wokeness.”

Iger generally did not give a specific answer to the question, except to say that the company has seen many presidents in its 100-year history.

Iger’s interview was a victory lap of sorts after he successfully denied two board seats to investor Nelson Peltz and former Disney CFO Jay Laslo.

Mr. Peltz has publicly criticized Disney’s management practices, recently asking why Disney’s film division would screen films starring black people and women.

“Why do I have to have an all-female Marvel? Not that I’m against women, but why does it have to be that way? Why can’t we have both Marvels? ?Why do we need an all-black cast?” ? ”

Shocking failures of Disney films are piling up under multiple brands, including Marvel and Star Wars. It was even revealed that the latest Indiana joke movie cost the company over $130 million in losses.

Mr. Peltz, who owns millions of shares in the company, had sought to dismantle the film division, a feat Mr. Iger insists he is still trying to accomplish.
