Disney disappointed with DEI, says former employee: 'The vibe change is real'

Some former employees of the Walt Disney Company have expressed a sense of cautious optimism about the company’s current trajectory, especially regarding its progressive values.

Josh Dawes, a software engineer who spent over 12 years at Disney, announced on a social media platform that he was among 1,000 employees laid off during a restructuring phase.

“Internally, it’s gotten a lot better.”

Dawes mentioned that the layoffs were part of an initiative to “streamline operations.” Amidst this, he addressed questions from followers about Disney’s stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Decrease in DEI

A different ex-employee noted that the company might be moving away from its previous focus on inclusivity, hinting at a shift in overall atmosphere.

Dawes indicated that Disney’s emphasis on DEI peaked around 2020 but has since been on the decline, stating, “Internally it’s much better. The change in atmosphere is real.”

He also shared his discontent with the company’s DEI structure, noting that it had been significantly reduced since the election of former President Trump.

When asked who he thinks is responsible for Disney’s diversity efforts, he reflected on the influence of a small, vocal group within the company.

“A vocal minority”

In response to a question about why some individuals criticize Disney, particularly conservative Christians, Dawes attributed this to a “very small and vocal minority within the company,” emphasizing that most employees are simply focused on creating enjoyable content.

Dawes acknowledged that the company is aware of its approach towards fans, noting, “It’s not enough, but it’s more than you think” when discussing his interactions with other Christian colleagues.

Throughout the conversation, Dawes maintained a tone of cautious optimism, being careful not to disparage his former employer.

No “threat” to AI

On the subject of artificial intelligence, however, Dawes was more direct, asserting that Disney would leverage AI as a cost-saving strategy, claiming it isn’t a threat to the company.

Before his dismissal, Dawes mentioned that while AI might have contributed to the layoffs, his situation was largely due to his status as a remote worker.

Dawes chose not to comment further when reached out to for more details. The Walt Disney Company has yet to respond to inquiries regarding Dawes’ statements about DEI and AI.
