Disney+ Cancels Queer Series, Stirring Controversy
Disney+ is in the spotlight again, having canceled its unique Teen Horror series, Goosebumps. This decision has sparked varied reactions, with some framing it as a loss for representation. The series featured notable figures like David Schwimmer and Miles McKenna, an LGBTQ+ advocate.
This cancellation marks the third queer series to be cut from the platform recently, following Acolyte and Willow. Reports claim that all three series included on-screen LGBTQ+ themes.
In one episode of Goosebumps, a significant moment occurred between characters Seko and Alex. They, under pressure, prioritized a moment of intimacy. While the scene was acknowledged for its focus and emotional backdrop, some argue that even if it wasn’t the only kiss on the show, it stood out as particularly impactful.
While promoting acceptance is essential, many express concerns over the appropriateness of certain themes for younger audiences. Critics argue that introducing such complex topics without parental awareness seems more about influencing children, rather than fostering understanding.
Historically, Disney has been seen as a guardian of childhood innocence. However, many believe that recent choices indicate a shift away from that principle.
As I’ve mentioned before, there’s absolutely a place for LGBTQ+ representation in entertainment. However, some argue that this shouldn’t be aimed at children or integrated into shows designed for them.
