Disney has reportedly halted its plans for a live-action remake of the animated film “Tangled” from 2010, following the poor box-office performance of the recent “Snow White” movie, as per various released reports.

Multiple sources have reviewed the report, but initial details were shared by Hollywood Reporter, a prominent publication covering the Hollywood film, television, and entertainment sector.
“Tangled,” inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale “Rapunzel,” was in the development stage, according to Hollywood Reporter.
“Snow White” dropped to the number 4 spot at the box office this week after a disappointing debut and overall lack of success. Meanwhile, Disney films have grossed $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide, falling short of the estimated $270 million production budget.
As reported by Deadline, the film was in pre-production with discussions underway with a potential star when the company decided to pause the project for now.
Deadline also noted that the significant box office failure of “Snow White” played a crucial role in the decision to pause other planned live-action adaptations.
Meanwhile, the “Flop” movie faced criticism from the start.
The initial advertisements featuring the portrayal of the “Seven Dwarves” sparked controversies among notable Hollywood actors, particularly those with dwarfism, like Peter Dinklage. The released scenes depicted dwarves who looked distinct from the original story’s portrayal.
Another persistent issue centered on lead actress Rachel Zegler.
During filming, Zegler made statements regarding ongoing political issues, including the Israel-Hamas conflict. This reportedly created a tense working environment, as Gal Gadot, another leading actress, is Jewish and has served in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF).
In addition to Zegler’s vocal criticism of the Israeli government, she has frequently targeted Trump supporters on social media. This is particularly risky for a leading actress, given that nearly half the country voted for Trump in the last election. Her remarks, including a statement wishing that Trump supporters would “not know peace,” may have alienated a significant portion of potential viewers.
At one point, Zegler referred to the film’s “Prince Charming” character as a “Stalker,” indicating that the new interpretation of “Snow White” diverges significantly from the original.
“We have a different perspective. Many might think it’s a love story,” Zegler stated. “[Snow White is] “The prince will not rescue her, and she will not dream of true love,” she further explained.
“Snow White” earned a 44% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, past live-action adaptations such as Disney’s The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin each grossed over $1 billion globally. However, “Dumbo” (2019) was also labeled a failure, as was “Pinocchio” (2022).
Still, two more live-action Disney remakes are in the pipeline, including “Lilo & Stitch,” a remake of the beloved 2002 film, which is set to hit theaters on May 23rdrd.
Next summer, audiences will also be treated to another live-action adaptation of “Moana,” a franchise that has enjoyed success both in theaters and on streaming platforms. “Moana 2” has grossed $1 billion since its release last November.
