Gina Carano, an actress from Texas and former martial artist, portrayed a strong female character in Disney’s popular series The Mandalorian.
Disney has typically been accommodating of various extreme views presented by its liberal talent. However, they decided to part ways with Carano, apparently not wanting to support her prominent conservative viewpoints during the pandemic.
Despite the challenges from the corporate side, Carano remained resilient. Recently, she received a significant outcome for her efforts.
Where It All Started
In February 2021, after the second season of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm fired the actress, leading her to seek information from outside sources.
A representative from Lucasfilm stated, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm, and she has no plans to be in future projects.” They criticized her for social media posts that they deemed offensive, targeting people’s cultural and religious identities.
The month before her termination, Carano stirred controversy by humorously labeling her pronouns as “beep/bop/boop.” She also expressed skepticism about mask mandates and Voter ID laws, which upset many.
The final straw for Disney appeared to be Carano’s comparison of Covid restrictions to the early days of Nazi Germany in a social media post.
In her post, she remarked, “The Jews were not Nazis but were assaulted in their own communities, even by children.” She argued that society today is manipulated into harboring hatred against specific groups.
Though her remarks were widely condemned, some polls indicated a troubling sentiment among the public regarding government actions during the pandemic, with significant portions of the population supporting extreme measures.
Carano addressed the backlash against her statements, claiming she was silenced due to not conforming to the prevailing narrative. She also announced her support for people fired for exercising their free speech.
In early 2024, she filed a lawsuit against Disney, alleging wrongful termination and discrimination.
What Followed
Despite efforts from Disney to resolve the legal matters quietly, Carano publicly rebuked them, asserting that they had long been aware of their actions against her.
On Thursday evening, she revealed an agreement had been reached with Disney/Lucasfilm, suggesting a mutual resolution beneficial to all parties involved. Carano expressed excitement about moving on and returning to her artistic endeavors.
A Lucasfilm spokesperson confirmed the resolution, stating they look forward to potential collaborations with Carano in the future.
