Dispute over MTG's old seat remains unsettled on election night, while a Trump-supported Republican experiences success

Marjorie Taylor Greene Resigns from Congress

On January 5th, former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican, announced her resignation from her position representing Georgia’s 14th Congressional District.

Sean Harris, a Democrat and retired brigadier general, previously lost to Greene. He aimed to reclaim the seat in a recent special election, but faced unexpected competition from Clay Fuller, a staunch Republican. Fuller had previously served in the Air National Guard and left his role in the district attorney’s office to pursue this congressional run.

As of Wednesday morning, Fuller had garnered over 95% of the votes. Former President Donald Trump referred to him as an “America First Patriot” in a recent speech. Fuller’s campaign received a notable endorsement from Trump last month, although he secured only 34.9% of the total votes, as reported by the Associated Press.

Fuller’s endorsement significantly outperformed a crowded field of Republican candidates, including former State Senator Colton Moore. Moore labeled himself as “Trump’s number one defender for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District,” but only managed to capture 11.6% of the vote.

None of the other Republican candidates surpassed the 5% threshold.

Harris, by contrast, managed to secure 37.3% of the votes. However, neither Harris nor Fuller achieved the required majority—greater than 50%—to win outright, leading to a runoff election scheduled for April 7. This runoff will allow Fuller to compete without facing additional Republican challengers.

Commenting on the election results, Fuller declared, “This can be called a complete victory,” during his election night gathering. He expressed confidence in Trump’s support and emphasized the urgency for Republican unity in Congress.

In a message just before midnight, Trump congratulated Fuller, stating, “Congratulations to Mr. Clay Fuller… Clay will be a great congressman – he will never let you down!”

Despite the election’s outcome, Harris remained optimistic, asserting, “This race isn’t over yet.” He emphasized a growing momentum and the expanding support for his campaign.
