Controversial Call in SEC Game Between Auburn and Georgia
During Saturday’s SEC matchup, a crucial call was reportedly overlooked by officials that might have changed the outcome for Auburn.
In the waning moments of the second quarter, with Auburn on Georgia’s 1-yard line, quarterback Jackson Arnold made a break for the end zone. However, just as he crossed the goal line, Georgia’s defense managed to punch the ball out.
It seemed like Arnold had control of the ball post-impact, but the referees declared it a fumble, allowing Georgia to recover.
In the ensuing chaos, Georgia defensive back Kyron Jones seemingly returned the ball into the end zone, yet officials ruled it dead even without him touching the ground.
This puzzling decision sparked frustration on both sidelines, as fans believed their teams had scored.
Commentator Sean McDonough, speaking on ESPN, questioned the call: “If it was a fumble, why didn’t the play continue?” He and his team believed that part of the ball had indeed crossed the line, implying it should have been counted as a touchdown for Auburn. “He’s got the ball, he’s crossing the line. That’s a touchdown,” he stated.
If the call had gone Auburn’s way, they would have had an opportunity for an extra point, putting them ahead 16-0.
Instead, the decision favored Georgia, who then made a successful drive down the field to score a field goal, leading to a halftime score of 10-3.
Auburn, now with a disappointing 3-2 record, faces speculation about head coach Hugh Freeze’s future.
Despite the rumors, Freeze emphasized in a recent SEC coaches’ conference call that he remains focused solely on the game. “I don’t care about that,” he remarked. “Of course, I’m a man of faith, and I know my story is being written well above my pay grade. We’re doing things the right way here.”
He elaborated, saying, “Every game we’re getting closer. We’re gearing up to face three straight top-10 teams, and we have a chance to beat them. That’s all we’re focused on.” He stressed that it’s about the players and preparing them for a tough rivalry against Georgia.
