Disputed religious discussion arises regarding Mormons on War Department faith list

Army Department Adjusts Faith List, Causes Controversy

The Department of the Army has revised its Code of Faith, leading to the removal of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from its list of Christian churches. This decision has ignited a vigorous theological debate on social media platforms.

Members of the LDS Church, commonly referred to as Mormons, expressed their outrage at being excluded from the Christian category, feeling it undermines their beliefs.

Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah was particularly vocal regarding the changes. “I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” he stated in a post. “My church membership, like that of 17 million other Latter-day Saints, is closely linked to my Christian faith, regardless of the views of the Department of Defense.”

Some voices in the discussion suggested that the theological stances of the LDS Church distinctly separate it from conventional Christianity. Father Ronald Viering noted, “From a strictly theological perspective, Catholics don’t recognize Mormons as Christians,” pointing out their rejection of the Trinity as a key difference.

Senator Lee later mentioned that he had discussions with former President Donald Trump about this situation. “While I can’t speak for him, I am hopeful about where this will lead,” he shared.

On Monday, the Army Department revised its list again, admitting that the initial omission was a mistake. In a statement, they explained, “A draft list of simplified faith standards was mistakenly released. While some labels were unnecessary, corrections have been made.”

The agency is working on streamlining their coding system, which had grown quite complex with over 200 codes.

They further clarified, stating, “The Department of Defense’s role isn’t to settle theological disputes. Instead, it aims to ensure all sincere faiths are respected and encouraged among our ranks.”

Senator Lee thanked Army Secretary Pete Hegseth for addressing the issue.
