Questions Arise About Biden’s Health Following Doctor’s Testimony
This week, Kevin O’Connor, who served as President Joe Biden’s private physician, testified before the House Oversight Committee in Washington, D.C. During a closed-door session, he requested revisions to every question except for his name.
His appearance sparked interest in the differences between a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD). Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, clarified that their capabilities are essentially the same. “He’s a family practitioner,” he noted, emphasizing the necessity of understanding screenings for various health issues.
Siegel highlighted that while osteopathic training adds certain techniques like manipulative treatment, it does not diminish the quality or extent of medical training received. He suggested that O’Connor should be equipped to recognize cognitive decline in patients and seek further expertise if needed.
In his role as a White House doctor, O’Connor had the critical duty of attending to the president’s health. While both DOs and MDs have comparable academic backgrounds and practice across the country, there are subtle distinctions in their approaches to treatment. According to Cleveland Clinic, DOs tend to focus more specifically on the connections between the mind and body.
Osteopathic medicine promotes a holistic view of patient care, prioritizing education and preventive measures. Moreover, DOs receive extra training in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), a hands-on practice aimed at diagnosing and treating patients.
Interestingly, there has been an upsurge in the number of practicing DOs in the U.S., particularly among younger doctors. As of 2023, while there were 154 allopathic medical schools, the count of osteopathic schools stood at 38. Reports indicate that a significant proportion of DOs specialize in family medicine and pediatrics.
Since taking office in 2021, O’Connor has dealt with Biden’s health needs until March 2025, after which Dr. Sean Barbabera, a decorated Navy doctor, stepped into the position. This situation, complicated by ongoing discussions among GOP members, has been underscored by their investigation into potential concealment of Biden’s health issues by former aides, although Biden’s allies have denied these claims.
