District Judge Cannon makes decision regarding Trump opponent's special report from the Biden administration

Federal Judge Rules on Trump Report Release

A significant legal battle culminated recently when a federal judge seemed to finalize a pivotal report that former President Donald Trump has persistently sought to keep private.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon, who has been part of the Southern District of Florida since 2020, ruled that the Justice Department should not disclose former special counsel Jack Smith’s final report regarding Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, as reported by Politico.

Judge Cannon noted, “Special Counsel Smith and his team worked tirelessly for months to prepare Volume 2, utilizing the evidence gathered in connection with this case and incurring government expenses in the process.”

Trump’s effort to prevent the release of this special counsel’s report received approval from Cannon, who previously deemed the report’s creation by Smith and his team during the Biden administration to be illegal.

The ruling specified that the Department of Justice and any future administrations are restricted from (a) publishing, sharing, or transmitting any part of Volume 2 of the Final Report or any draft outside the Department of Justice, and (b) disseminating or discussing any information or findings contained in Volume 2 with individuals outside the Department.

Cannon mentioned that the case has been “complex,” citing nearly 800 filings since the indictment began in June 2023. Her decision effectively stops any potential publication of the forthcoming second volume of Smith’s report.

Interestingly, another motion submitted by Trump and two co-defendants, which sought to discard Volume II entirely, was only partially denied.
