Chilling Body Camera Footage Released in Baldwin Park Shooting Incident
A year after a tragic shooting shook the peaceful Baldwin Park community, authorities have unveiled disturbing body camera footage and audio from the incident. This footage captures the chaotic moments when the shooter opened fire at police officers.
Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, 22, faces serious charges, including two counts of murder, linked to the deaths of Officer Samuel Riveros, 35, and Darius Wong, a 43-year-old father of two. His court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
The violent events unfolded on May 31, 2025, when law enforcement responded to reports of shooting in the 4200 block of Philhurst Avenue. Wong, who had already been shot, was on his way to a housewarming party when he lost his life.
From the moment officers arrived, Berumen began firing at them. The released video illustrates bullets striking a police vehicle, with an officer returning fire and attempting to assist a wounded colleague injured by shattering glass.
In the body camera footage, Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department, can be seen quickly arriving on the scene and warning nearby residents to stay away from danger. Tragically, as he moved along the sidewalk, he was shot.
Police Chief Robert Lopez noted that the gunman continued firing after hitting Riveros, hindering the officers’ ability to safely reach both the injured officer and Wong. In a YouTube video, Lopez remarked, “After striking the officer, Berumen continued to fire on other officers, preventing the injured officer and the first victim from being quickly removed to safety for treatment.”
Eventually, officers managed to get Riveros to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Even after being shot by police, Berumen remained armed with a rifle when confronted. Audio recordings from the scene capture officers issuing repeated commands, urging him to “Drop your gun!” He was ultimately taken into custody.
The department has released the footage as part of a 15-minute video that details this deadly encounter, which resulted in the loss of both a dedicated police officer and an innocent father.
