In a courtroom setting on Wednesday, an ultrasound image of Sandra Birchmore’s unborn son was presented during the trial of former police officer Matthew Farwell. He faces accusations of murdering Birchmore to silence her regarding their affair and her pregnancy.
The jury viewed various photographs of Birchmore’s untidy apartment in Canton, Massachusetts, where her body was discovered on February 4, 2021. This was three days after Farwell allegedly strangled her and made it appear as though she had taken her own life.
One striking image depicted the refrigerator of the 23-year-old expectant mother, showcasing a photo of her ultrasound secured by a magnet.
Another picture displayed a baby stroller box, found upside-down on the floor of her apartment.
According to federal prosecutors, she was at least eight months pregnant when she died.
Prosecutors claim that Farwell killed Birchmore to prevent her from revealing their seven-year sexual relationship, which began when she was just 15 and involved alleged abuse from him.
It’s important to note that both Birchmore and Farwell believed that she was carrying his child, although DNA testing later disproved this.
Interestingly, Farwell’s wife gave birth to their third child a day after Birchmore was killed, as reported by federal officials.
Jurors learned that Birchmore had only recently moved into her apartment in December 2020, just weeks before her death.
The photographs presented revealed a cluttered and unclean space, filled with items like water bottles, soda cans, and other debris scattered on floors, surfaces, and countertops.
Images indicated that her bed was unmade, her kitchen sink brimmed with soda cans, and her carpet bore numerous stains.
Cheryl Carlson, former assistant principal of the school where Birchmore worked, recounted her disbelief over the initial ruling of suicide. She felt compelled to contact investigators directly, noting that it just didn’t align with Birchmore’s character.
“She was really excited about having that baby,” Carlson reflected. “It didn’t fit who she was.”
Birchmore had also confided in Carlson about her disagreements with the baby’s father, but she remained resolute in her desire to have the child, no matter the circumstances.
After learning about her pregnancy in December, Birchmore excitedly texted Farwell a photo, saying they were going to be parents. Unfortunately, he coldly replied, saying she was “the worst person on the face of Earth.”
Prosecutors asserted that Birchmore threatened to inform Farwell’s wife about the affair if he didn’t get her pregnant, which led him to comply.
Farwell allegedly began grooming Birchmore when she was 13, involved in a program he helped manage, and began abusing her at the age of 15, according to the prosecution.
After he killed her, prosecutors allege he attempted to disguise the murder as a suicide, arranging her body in a manner that suggested hanging.
The jury was shown disturbing images of her body, discovered three days following her death.
Farwell has pleaded not guilty to the charges of murdering a witness and causing the death of an unborn child.
His attorney asserts that Birchmore took her own life, citing her history with mental health issues to bolster this defense.
Conversely, prosecutors argue that Birchmore was elated about her pregnancy and was proactively addressing her mental health, including resuming her use of antidepressants in preparation for the baby.
