The leading law enforcement figure in Michigan has criticized her own party’s Senate candidate for justifying a terrorist attack on a Jewish synagogue.
Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is Jewish herself, expressed her concerns about Abdul El-Sayed’s remarks regarding the March attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township during an interview on “The David Frum Show” released Wednesday.
Nessel mentioned, “And that’s the kind of mentality that bothers me a lot,” reflecting her disapproval of El-Sayed’s response.
One statement that particularly irked her was El-Sayed’s use of the phrase “hurt people hurt people.” This phrase also appeared during an April press conference in Michigan, where he stood alongside left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, as reported by Jewish Insider.
In his remarks, El-Sayed acknowledged, “I also think it’s just critical for us to understand that hurt people do hurt people, and the circumstances happening 6,000 miles away can affect the lives that we live here, and if we stand against violence, we’ve got to stand against violence, all violence.”
Many members of the Jewish community interpreted this comment as an excuse for the individual who attempted to harm over 100 preschoolers, Nessel pointed out in her conversation with Frum.
While El-Sayed has met with Jewish officials in private since winning the primary, he has not retracted his statement, Nessel noted.
She contrasted this with her own actions following the 2019 mass shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. After that tragic event, which resulted in 51 fatalities, Nessel visited a mosque in Dearborn and condemned the violence without exploring the shooter’s motivations.
On March 12, Ayman Mohamed Ghazali drove into the Michigan synagogue and shot himself in his vehicle after a brief standoff with security. The FBI linked the attack to Hezbollah and found that the gunman targeted the Jewish community specifically. Ghazali’s brother was a Hezbollah commander killed in an Israeli operation, as per reports. Fortunately, none of the 103 children inside the synagogue were harmed.
After his primary victory, El-Sayed reiterated his condemnation of the attack, declaring it a vile and antisemitic act during an interview with CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe on August 5.
Nessel expressed her steadfast opposition to voting for Republican candidate Mike Rogers, despite some Jewish Democrats in Michigan now showing support for him.
