Sean McDermott Dismissed After Playoff Loss
Sean McDermott was let go by the Bills on Monday, just two days following a tough playoff defeat against the Broncos. This decision came five weeks after he expressed concerns about the team’s roster to general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula.
According to WGRZ, McDermott remarked, “I pointed out what was missing on the roster to win a Super Bowl… I hear that neither Beane nor Pegula are satisfied with McDermott’s evaluation.”
The NFL Network later confirmed that there was a rift among the Bills’ leadership regarding McDermott’s future.
Reporter Ian Rapoport shared insights, stating that McDermott himself questioned whether the team had the talent needed to succeed. “I don’t know if it would have fit well into the building,” he added.
In the aftermath of McDermott’s firing, Beane received a promotion to president of football operations. This is somewhat unusual for a team that hasn’t met its objectives.
During his tenure, McDermott guided the Bills to the playoffs in eight out of nine seasons. However, he struggled to emerge victoriously against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, losing to them four times in five seasons between 2020 and 2024.
While the Bills had some talent, featuring a solid offensive line and star quarterback Josh Allen alongside rushing leader James Cook, the absence of a top receiver has become increasingly evident since the departure of Stefon Diggs in the 2024 season.
Notably, Beane traded the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Chiefs, who selected speedy receiver Xavier Worthy, with Keon Coleman following just six picks later.
Now, as McDermott’s coaching career in Buffalo comes to an end, he quickly becomes a candidate for other vacant coaching positions. The Titans, Dolphins, Falcons, and Giants have filled their roles, leaving openings still available with the Browns, Steelers, Raiders, and Ravens.
The Bills will need to find a coach who can help them move beyond their recent playoff struggles. Still, Beane may remain steadfast in his personnel choices, especially after his recent promotion amidst a disappointing season.
