DJ Lagway from Florida Transfers Following Coaches' Concerns About His 'Drive and Effort'

Florida Gators Quarterback DJ Lagway Enters Transfer Portal

DJ Lagway, the quarterback who was a significant recruit under former Gators coach Billy Napier, is no longer with the team. The shock came early Monday when it was reported that the highly sought-after 2023 recruit decided to enter the transfer portal, even though those close to him had recently expressed that he wanted to stay in Gainesville.

The situation seems to have escalated following a meeting with Florida’s new coaching team. Sources indicate that Lagway, keen to understand the development plans crafted by new head coach John Sumrall and his staff, was perhaps taken aback by the feedback he received.

As reported, “He didn’t care about money… he just wanted to know if you were capable of coaching him.” Unfortunately, that wasn’t the message Lagway received. Instead, Sumrall and his staff seemingly took a different approach, focusing on challenging Lagway’s commitment and competitiveness.

According to CBS Sports, there were indications of uncertainty regarding Lagway’s abilities as a football player from the new staff. They aimed to test his competitive edge and work ethic, particularly since the team was considering other high-profile quarterbacks.

Despite Lagway’s strong reputation for hard work on campus, his on-field performance this season has raised concerns. He threw 14 interceptions, ranking second highest in the FBS, and exhibited issues with mechanics and reading defenses, which impacted his connection with receivers.

Injuries during the offseason certainly affected his growth and ability to build that necessary chemistry. Now healthy, Lagway possesses immense talent. Any program looking to recruit him will have to weigh his past performance against the context of his experiences at Florida, especially as the new coaching staff didn’t seem eager to retain him.
