Multiple states across the country reported service disruptions at Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices Thursday.
The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), an organization that provides software to DMV offices across the country, said there were problems with the network that connects various agencies across the country.
The organization said in an emailed statement that the outage was “due to loss of cloud connectivity.”
The outage lasted from 9:50 a.m. EDT Thursday to approximately 12:30 p.m.
“During that time, we did not have the capacity to process messages that support driver’s license and vehicle title transactions,” AAMVA said in a statement. “As a result, many motor vehicle agencies were unable to issue driver’s licenses or vehicle titles during the power outage.”
The organization said it was working “internally” and with its “cloud provider” to determine the root cause of the outage.
Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles issued a statement People with reservations for Thursday are being advised to reschedule due to the power outage. The Colorado office said most services were affected by the outage, except driver license and permit testing.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannulias reported a power outage. Giannoulias urged residents to call before visiting DMV offices, as power outages “may impact business hours and services.”
