Murder Charges Filed After Nearly 30 Years
Nearly three decades after a young woman was found murdered in a drainage ditch in Azusa, California, authorities have announced that a 63-year-old man is facing charges linked to the case, which was resolved through DNA analysis.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has charged Brian Walton with murder, alleging that Claudia Guevara’s death occurred during a violent act of rape and sodomy.
In a statement, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed sympathy for the victim’s family, noting their long wait for justice. He emphasized that, while this case was considered cold, the commitment to truth and accountability will never wane.
Guevara was reported missing on February 20, 1996. Her brother claimed she was last seen at a bus stop in El Monte after being dropped off by coworkers. Tragically, her body was discovered a day later in a drainage ditch, revealing that she had been sexually assaulted and stabbed.
DNA evidence ultimately connected Walton, who had no prior relationship with Guevara, to the crime. He was arrested on February 5 and remains in custody without bail.
Walton is scheduled to appear in court on March 18. If found guilty, he could face life in prison or potentially the death penalty, though prosecutors will decide later on seeking the latter option.
