DNA firm 23andMe files for bankruptcy

The company said it had secured $35 million in funding over the weekend and would continue to operate during the sales process.

Still, consumer advocates and privacy experts have raised great concerns about the future of genetic data held by companies like 23andME, and its bankruptcy could lead to the sale or transfer of a wide range of databases.

Federal protections currently provide limited support to consumers who have provided genetic data to private companies like 23andMe.

The Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) for Health Insurance, which protects medical data, has not expanded to consumer genetic testing companies.

Other laws, such as the Non-Discrimination Act of Genetic Information (GINA), provide some protection against discrimination, but comprehensive data privacy remains a major gap.

Bankruptcy law provides modest protections by including monitoring from federal courts and sometimes surveillance from Privacy Ombuds Persons, but these protections are limited.

Meanwhile, 23andMe co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki announced her resignation at X, revealing plans to become an independent bidder for the company she has built.

Yale-trained biologist and former healthcare analyst Wojcicki co-founded 23andMe in 2006, and has the vision of individuals having direct access to genetic data.

Brin and Wojcicki split in 2013 and after eight years of marriage, they finalised their divorce in 2015.

Split was released around the time Brynn surfaced that he was involved in a romantic relationship with Amanda Rosenberg, a Google employee who worked in the now-deprecated marketing department of Google Glass.

Neither Brin nor Vozicki publicly confirmed the issue as a cause, but the media outlets have broadly linked it to the collapse of their marriage.

Both Brin and Wojcicki remain relatively private in the details, particularly to share their two children.

Government officials are urging 23 customers to delete data from the company's database.

The company is best known for its consumer DNA test kits. This allows customers to analyze their ancestors and health risks using simple saliva samples.

Valued at $6 billion a few months after its initial public offering in 2020, 23andMe's market capitalization plunged to just $50 million.

At its peak, 23andme stock was trading at around $320 per share in early 2021. As of Monday, the stock was below $1.

In recent years, the company has been increasing pressure from investors and regulatory authorities, facing legal challenges resulting from a massive data breaches in 2023, violating the personal information of nearly 7 million users.

This September, the company agreed to pay $30 million to resolve lawsuits related to data breach.

In November, the company significantly cut 40% of its labor force to cut costs.

Mark Jensen, chair and member of the board's special committee, said the decision to pursue the sale of court teachers followed a “full assessment of strategic alternatives.”

“The court's oversight process hopes to advance efforts to address the operational and financial challenges we face, including further cost reductions and resolution of legal and lease liabilities,” he said.
