During a House Oversight Committee meeting on Thursday, Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) reacted strongly to President Trump’s efforts to address crime in Washington, D.C., calling it a “fascist takeover.”
Tlaib criticized her Republican peers for misrepresenting the crime situation in the capital, saying, “I can’t see what they’re seeing.” She expressed concern that this approach was harmful to her community.
“It’s really crucial that we oppose this fascist takeover. That’s not an exaggeration,” Tlaib asserted, addressing Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and emphasizing that Washington, D.C. shouldn’t be misrepresented.
When Tlaib’s speaking time concluded, Representative Byron Donald (R-Fla.), a staunch supporter of Trump’s crime initiatives, interjected, keeping the dialogue going.
Chairman Comer pointed out what he viewed as a lack of substantial arguments from the opposing side, calling it “insane.” He then challenged Tlaib, asking, “Do I look like a member of the Third Reich to you?”
Tlaib was later reminded of prior allegations against Donald, suggesting he voted from afar when he was absent from the House.
Amidst the chaos, Tlaib emphasized, “You can’t just hand off your vote card to someone else. That’s unethical!” She was firm in her criticisms of Donald’s responses to her accusations.
“Is that what you think? It’s radical and outrageous. To say things like that is beyond the pale,” Donald retorted.
Tlaib responded by urging him to take responsibility for his actions.
Donald countered, “You take your own responsibility. How about that?”
As tensions escalated, Tlaib started chanting, “Free DC! Free DC!” prompting Chairman Comer to regain control of the room.
After the session, Donald expressed his frustration to reporters, feeling that Tlaib and her allies were labeling him unfairly as “fascists.” He remarked, “She employed the same irresponsible rhetoric that has had serious consequences in the past,” referencing a tragic event.
