Do the Astros have what it takes for another championship run?

The Houston Astros and Postseason Baseball

If you’re not from South Texas, it can be hard to wrap your head around the idea that the Astros are now basically synonymous with October baseball. It’s a significant thing to consider. Over the past nine years, the team has enjoyed eight playoff appearances, won seven division titles, and secured seven consecutive league championships. They’ve even bagged a trophy along the way.

Since reaching their peak, the baseball landscape for the Astros has seen quite a few changes in the roster. They’ve been trying to bounce back from what was their worst full season since 2017. Recently, they achieved a sweep against the Tigers, ending with a record of 88 wins and 73 losses, which got them into the wildcard series.

Now, about the odds. They might not have seemed too favorable at first, but perhaps the Astros were finally on the upswing. Last October, their odds opened at +1,200, but now, they’re at +600 to win the World Series according to FanDuel, with a +1500 for the American League pennant. There’s some friendly competition in the AL West, too, especially with the Mariners making waves.

Pitching Staff Insights

Considering the uncertain return of Jordan Alvarez, it seems like a good moment to invest in their pitching staff, which is currently ranked second in overall ERA (3.72) and XFIP (3.90) on FanGraphs. Hunter Brown is making headlines this year with a solid ERA of 2.27, while being in the 97th percentile for average exit velocities. Framber Valdez is also steady with a 3.59 ERA, showcasing the depth and resilience of the rotation.

While the offense isn’t quite what it used to be during their peak success, having experience and strong pitching will be key attributes as they strive for playoff success.
