Poll Assesses Cuomo’s Viability in NYC Mayoral Race

A recent poll from Tuesday night gauged whether voters in New York City see Andrew Cuomo as a potential candidate for the upcoming mayoral general election, especially after his defeat to socialist Zoran Mamdani in the Democratic primary.

The survey was carried out by a market research firm that utilized a text format to gather responses from participants.

The initial question focused on voters’ preferences for mayoral candidates. Cuomo appeared first under a minor party line, Fight & Dervie. Coming in second was Republican Curtis Sliwa, while Mamdani was mentioned third among Democrats, followed by the current mayor, Eric Adams, and independent candidate Jim Walden.

The poll further inquired, “If Eric Adams opts out of running for mayor in the November elections, whom would you support?” This was followed by a somewhat rhetorical question about the likelihood of voting for Cuomo.

Participants were presented with both affirmative and critical statements about the backgrounds of Cuomo and Mamdani, which later included additional criticism directed at Mamdani.

The survey suggested that voters were “randomly selected” to review comments from “Critics of Zohran Mamdani.”

One notable statement mentioned Mamdani’s opposition to a law aimed at prohibiting revenge pornography, as well as raising concerns about fiscal issues like a potential deficit that could harm small businesses and education funding.

Mamdani’s stance on Israel was also highlighted, accusing him of holding positions that could be interpreted as anti-Israel, including claims of apartheid and genocide in Gaza. Additionally, it was noted that he advocated for reducing the NYPD budget by $3 billion and freezing police job hires.

The poll concluded by reiterating the question of voter preferences, especially concerning Mamdani’s calls for changes within the police department.

In the Democratic primary, Mamdani beat Cuomo, securing 56% of the ranked choice votes compared to Cuomo’s 44%. Interestingly, Mayor Adams did not participate in the primary at all.

While Clear Insight declined to comment on the voting preferences of its clients, the Cuomo camp also chose not to respond. A pro-Cuomo insider remarked that the City Super PAC had not cast a vote yet.
