Doctor discusses important lifestyle factors that may lead to penis shrinkage

It’s a common concern for many men—the thought of their penises shrinking as they age. And, interestingly enough, this is a very real possibility influenced by various lifestyle choices and circumstances.

Penis shrinkage usually happens gradually as part of aging, which is perfectly normal. On average, an erect penis measures about 5.16 inches, while its flaccid state is around 3.61 inches. So, whether you identify as a ‘grower’ or a ‘shower’, the typical shrinkage tends to hover between half an inch to an inch.

A smaller size likely won’t have a drastic impact on your sex life; however, there are factors that could accelerate the shrinkage process.

Let’s dive in.

Obesity

Gaining weight, particularly around the abdomen, can create the illusion of a shorter penis. A larger fat pad at the base often obscures part of the shaft.

According to urologist Rena Malik, the primary reason men think their penis is shrinking when it’s not is due to weight gain. “Typically, urologists measure penis length consistently each time, usually in a warm room at a stretched length,” she explained.

Prostate Surgery

After undergoing prostate cancer surgery, some men may experience temporary shortening of about 1cm. Research indicates that while initial length might decrease, it often improves as erectile function returns over time.

“You could see a reduction in length ranging from half an inch to three-quarters of an inch,” Dr. Malik noted.

Peyronie’s Disease

This condition leads to scar tissue forming inside the penis, causing curvature, which can affect both length and girth and sometimes result in painful intercourse.

“You’ll likely notice a distinct lump or a change in the bending of your penis,” added Malik.

Preventing or Managing Shrinkage

Dr. Arkady Lipnitsky suggests that pelvic floor exercises, combined with a healthier lifestyle, can help manage shrinkage. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key. Eating well and cutting back on alcohol—especially beer, as it can lower testosterone—are important steps,” he advised.

Moreover, incorporating pelvic floor exercises is crucial. For instance, Kegels, quick pulses, and bridge exercises can strengthen those muscles. Just contract your pelvic muscles, hold for a few seconds, then relax. Aim for 10-15 reps, three times a day.

Conclusion

Staying healthy and active can make a significant difference, potentially helping to combat the effects of aging on penis size.
