Injury Update on Cam Skatebo After Giants’ Game
Cam Skatebo, the New York Giants running back, faced a significant injury during the team’s recent match against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, the replay of the incident wasn’t shown, which is a shame considering it marked a troubling turn in what started as a promising rookie season.
During the game, Skatebo was tackled by Zach Baun, resulting in a dislocated ankle and torn ligaments. He underwent surgery in Philadelphia shortly after the injury occurred, according to physical therapist Tom Chryst, who stated that the wound was open, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
Chryst expressed concerns about infection, pointing out that Skatebo experienced an open fracture—where the bone can protrude through the skin. He elaborated that this type of injury raises the risk of bacteria from the field accessing the bone, which could lead to severe complications. Reflecting on a similar case from 2018, he mentioned how Alex Smith nearly faced life-threatening issues due to an infection from his injuries.
Coach Brian Daboll acknowledged that Skatebo has a lengthy recovery journey ahead, a sentiment echoed by Chryst, assuming Skatebo manages to prevent any infections.
For the next several weeks, Skatebo is expected to focus on strengthening his left leg, with doctors advising that he won’t be able to put weight on his injured right leg initially. Full range of motion may take about three months to restore, while he likely won’t be cleared for jogging or weightlifting for around four months. However, if all goes well, he could start intensive rehabilitation within twelve weeks.
Interestingly, Skatebo’s playing style—a more traditional, powerful approach rather than a speed-focused one—might work in his favor during recovery. As Chryst notes, his robust playing style could make it easier for him to bounce back compared to speedier players who may struggle to regain their top form after similar injuries.
Despite the severity of his injury, Skatebo’s youth at just 23 years old may play a crucial role in his healing process. Chryst emphasized that younger athletes often heal more efficiently, so with the right care and rehabilitation, there’s a solid chance Skatebo can return to his formidable playing level.
