Doctor suspended after refusing to use preferred pronouns

A doctor was suspended from medical school after getting into an argument with a woman who asked for a testosterone injection because she wanted to become a man. Doctors said that despite the male pronouns and testosterone injections, the patient would remain female. The university declared that doctors must adhere to a patient's preferred “gender identity.”

Dr. Raymond Briere, who has 700 patients in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, had been meeting with the anonymous woman for at least four years before the confrontation in 2022.

During the examination, the woman reportedly asked for a prescription for testosterone because she already uses male pronouns.

The doctor noted that he had never helped his patients transition into men and warned that testosterone therapy could make women more aggressive. daily mail report.

The patient disputed this claim, telling the doctor that his opinion was based on “stereotypes.” She was then offered testosterone gel, but she requested the injections as a faster means of “masculinizing”.

The patient also allegedly made a recording of Dr. Briere claiming to be “genetically female” even after treatment. Doctors reportedly said that a genetic analysis of the patient would show that he has two XX chromosomes instead of the XY chromosomes of his male girlfriend.

Briere was also asked to refer to the woman as “he/him,” to which he responded that she was “biologically female.”

The doctor then told the patient that it was “in your brain” that he believed he was a man.

“I was a patient until today, [but] You were a woman, ma'am,'' Briere reportedly said.

Eventually, the two agreed that the patient should see another doctor, and Briere said he would arrange a new appointment. That was until another argument erupted over pronoun use, resulting in the doctor refusing to accept a new appointment.

This was a major issue for the Quebec School of Medicine, which sided with patients in the subsequent three-month suspension of Briere.

The university determined that the doctor had behaved in an “inappropriate and disrespectful manner.” It also added that it was “a doctor's duty” to build a trusting relationship with patients and ultimately abide by their patients' gender confusion.

”[If a patient] “If people believe that their gender identity does not match the gender listed on their birth certificate, they may request to see the gender identity they express,” the commission declared. “In such cases, medical interviews must be conducted with respect for this gender identity.” ”

The university added that there was no indication that the patient was “difficult” and referred to the patient as “he.”

Briere disagreed, saying the patient was “at best problematic or indicates that the mutual trust necessary for a professional relationship does not exist.”
