Concern Over Drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy
Medical professionals are raising alarms about a potentially irreversible side effect for individuals using medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy.
These drugs, mainly prescribed for Type 2 diabetes management, feature GLP-1 agonists that might lead to a serious health issue. Interestingly, we’ve seen public figures, like Jeremy Clarkson, share their experiences with Ozempic—including its adverse effects on his health while trying to lose weight. It’s worth noting that, despite this, many people continue to seek out these medications as a seemingly effective means to shed pounds.
Doctors globally have voiced concerns about both short- and long-term complications arising from these medications. Pharmaceutical companies are also encouraging the public to obtain proper prescriptions before starting treatment.
According to the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, both Wegovy® and Ozempic® are prescription medicines, necessitating careful oversight from healthcare professionals.
Now, medical experts, including The Royal Osteoporosis Society, are warning that using these drugs for unintended purposes might lead not only to fat loss but also to a dangerous decrease in muscle and bone mass.
This muscle loss can weaken an individual’s strength and joint stability, while diminished bone density increases the risk of osteoporosis—an ailment associated with fragile bones.
Julia Thomson, a Nurse Manager and Osteoporosis Specialist, emphasized, “It’s well-known that extreme or rapid weight loss can adversely affect bone and muscle mass, regardless of how that weight is lost. We don’t have conclusive evidence suggesting other mechanisms, besides weight loss, through which GLP-1s might negatively impact bone health. It’s also critical to recognize the health risks linked to obesity, including osteoporosis.”
She added that a careful balance is crucial and can only be maintained under the supervision of a qualified prescriber. This ensures that GLP-1s are prescribed genuinely for those in need, with monitored weight loss and nutritional support. Eating a calcium and protein-rich diet and incorporating regular exercise are vital for maintaining strong bones. Recently, singer Avery publicly disclosed her struggle with osteoporosis after taking Ozempic for just a year.
Professor Carl Heneghan from Oxford University’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine noted, “Any medication that diminishes muscle mass and bone density poses risks for frail individuals and those susceptible to fractures.” He pointed out that the longer patients are on these drugs, the higher the associated risks become.
Research indicates that women, particularly, are at greater risk for osteoporosis when taking these medications, especially since menopause can hasten bone loss due to reduced estrogen levels.
Dr. Taher Mahmud, founder of the London Osteoporosis Clinic, emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and engaging in weight-bearing exercises for those on GLP-1 agonists.
Inquiries have been made to the Royal Osteoporosis Society, Novo Nordisk, and Eli Lilly for further comments.
