Doctors Reveal Foods That Are Bad for Digestion

Gut Health Insights from an Expert

Dr. Shilpa Grover, who heads the onco-gastroenterology program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has some insights about refined grains and gut health. She points out that a diet high in red and processed meats, as well as refined grains, can significantly increase the risk of conditions like diverticulitis, which involves inflammatory pouches in the digestive tract.

Interestingly, Dr. Grover mentions that recent studies have shifted some common beliefs. Nuts, corn, and popcorn don’t seem to elevate the risk of developing diverticulosis or related issues like diverticulitis or bleeding, which is somewhat reassuring.

However, it’s not just gut health that’s at stake when consuming diets rich in red meat and refined grains. Dr. Grover notes that these same unhealthy diets are often linked to a higher risk of other serious health conditions, including diabetes, coronary artery disease, and even colorectal cancer. Therefore, diets aimed at reducing these risks may also help lower the chances of diverticulitis.

If you’re feeling a bit lost without your summer hot dogs, there’s no need to be overly concerned. Enjoying one occasionally won’t ruin your gut health, but moderation is key. Consider tossing in some sauerkraut for an extra gut-friendly boost!
