The Department of Defense (DOD) Inspector General (IG) is investigating the hospitalization of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and related actions that went unnoticed by President Joe Biden and other senior national security officials for several days. .
The DOD IG said in an emailed statement:
January 10th, [Inspector General Robert] Mr. Storch informed the Pentagon of his plans to begin a targeted review in January 2024. The purpose of the review is to consider and assess the roles, processes, procedures, responsibilities, and actions related to the Secretary of Defense's admissions from December 2023 to January 2024. Whether Department of Defense policies and procedures are sufficient to ensure timely and appropriate notification and effective transition of authority warranted for health reasons or other senior leadership absences.

In a memo notifying the Pentagon of the investigation, the Pentagon said the investigation will be conducted in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
“We may identify additional offices or personnel who may have information relevant to our investigation.”
The investigation's announcement came just days after the Pentagon announced it would conduct its own investigation.
