DOD Sec. Pete Hegseth Cuts Over $580M in Wasteful Contracts, Grants

Defense Secretary Pete Hegses on Thursday – in Penn's Stroke – cut more than $580 million with wasted contracts and grants funded with US taxpayer money.

Hegseth said in a video statement:

Today I am signing a memo directing the termination of a DOD contract of more than $580 million with grants that do not match the priorities of this President or the division. In other words, they are not making good use of taxpayer dollars. Ultimately, it's the one who's funding us. We take transparency into you and make sure we use it well.

Hegseth's notes directed the next end.

– Along with a six-year delayed software development program, over 780% of the budget known as the “Defensive Civil Personnel Management System (DCHRMS),” and related active contracts in the Defense Personnel Activities (DHRA).

According to the memo, the program had at least two years of development and testing estimated prior to its initial operating capabilities. Hegseth aimed to “rationalize a significant portion of the department's legacy human resources (HR) information technology stack.” However, he added that further investment in the DCHRMS project would “throw better taxpayer money after bad.” Therefore, I will work with the Director of DHRA, Chief LNFormation Officer of DOD, Director of the Military Division and HR Service Providers to develop a new plan within 60 days to achieve this mission,” he wrote.

– Additional grants exceeding $360 million in additional grants funding research efforts and other activities in diversity, equity, inclusion (DE) and related social programs, climate change, social sciences, COVID-19 pandemic response, and other areas that do not meet DOD priorities;

Hegseth said the $6 million grant was heading towards decarbonised emissions from naval vessels. The $5.2 million grant also said it would “diversify and engage the navy by being undervalued.” [biracial people of color] Students and academics. Another $9 million was spent at university approaching “fair” AI and machine learning models.

“We need a fatal machine learning model rather than a 'fair' machine learning model,” he said.

– A $30 million contract with consulting firms Gartner and McKinsey for non-critical analytical products to execute department priorities

In a memo, Hegseth said: “This first batch of cancellations is part of a broader effort to continue further in the coming weeks as my department's leadership is taking on to eliminate wasted spending on non-essential consulting services.”

He added: “These ends represent wasteful spending over $580 million in wasted spending that conflict with DOD priorities, and an estimated $170 million savings that can be reassigned to mission-critical priorities.

“I commend departmental leadership for identifying these opportunities to reduce wasted spending. And I encourage other leaders across the company to follow this example and identify more saving opportunities that can be reinvested into important mission needs.”

Hegseth believes the government's Office of Efficiency (DOGE) has helped identify grants and contracts, saying the total reductions so far amount to $800 million in just a few weeks.

“DOD has partnered with Doge here to ensure that Warfighter has what it takes to reduce waste, fraud and abuse, and in the first few weeks, $800 million wasted spending has been cancelled. They're working hard. We're working hard with them.
