Edwin Diaz Joins the Los Angeles Dodgers
Well, it looks like the rich just keep on getting richer. Edwin Diaz is reportedly heading to the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that’s already a two-time champion. This new deal is set to bring one of the best closers in the game over from the New York Mets, where he spent seven seasons under Steve Cohen.
According to sources, Diaz’s contract is valued at a substantial $69 million over three years.
Diaz’s journey with the Mets started off pretty rocky—his first season was nothing short of a nightmare, finishing with a 5.59 ERA after having a stellar season with the Seattle Mariners, where he led the majors with 57 saves. However, he’s turned things around over the years, posting a 2.36 ERA, and even had three seasons with an ERA under 1.75.
Last year, despite the Mets’ overall struggles and a hefty payroll exceeding $300 million, Diaz stood as a beacon of hope. He recorded a 1.63 ERA, struck out 98 batters over 66.1 innings, and saved 28 games, proving to be a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season.
The Dodgers really needed a solid closer after they dealt with various issues last season. They had signed Tanner Scott to a four-year deal but faced problems like injuries and poor performance. So, acquiring Diaz feels like a significant win for the team.
This deal breaks records, as it’s reportedly the highest average annual value ever given to a reliever.
And there’s still more buzzing around the Dodgers; rumors suggest that Tarik Skubal, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, might also be on their radar for a potential trade.
