Edwin Diaz Returns to Dodgers’ Roster
It’s time to celebrate again. After undergoing surgery three months ago to remove a loose body from his elbow, Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz is back on the team’s active roster as of Wednesday. His return from injured reserve comes at a crucial time when the bullpen has been facing some challenges.
Diaz’s comeback signifies a fresh start for the 32-year-old right-hander, who struggled with a 10.50 ERA in his seven appearances earlier this season. During that time, he experienced discomfort in his knee and later felt elbow pain during an April 19 game against the Rockies, which ultimately led to the diagnosis of a loose body.
This was certainly not the debut season he or the team had hoped for. But I guess, moving forward, they’re looking to turn that around.
Since Diaz’s injury, the Dodgers’ bullpen has remained generally stable, though it has been a bit inconsistent lately. The situation worsened after their record of 38 consecutive scoreless innings ended on May 25, leading to a team ERA of 4.98, ranking among the lowest in the majors during that stretch.
Filling in for Diaz, left-hander Tanner Scott stepped up as the unofficial closer, successfully converting 16 of 18 save opportunities. Yet, finding a reliable middle reliever to set up for the ninth has become increasingly challenging, particularly with the struggles facing Will Klein, Jack Dryer, and Evan Phillips, who’s working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
With the trade deadline coming up on Monday, there’s a chance the Dodgers may look to bolster their bullpen. Still, bringing Diaz back is seen as a significant boost for the team, arguably one of the most noteworthy additions mid-season. Prior to this year, he was regarded as one of the top closers, boasting 257 saves and a 2.91 ERA across ten seasons in the majors. All eyes will be on him as the Dodgers aim for a strong finish. I think fans are hoping to see him flourish now that he’s back. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
