Dodgers Navigate Late-Inning Drama to Win Against Royals
During the eighth inning on Tuesday night, it appeared the Dodgers were on the verge of losing their grip on the game.
It seemed like they were merely crafting a suspenseful finale.
In a thrilling twist, the Dodgers sealed a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals, bouncing back from a tough two-week slump. Max Muncy’s decisive hit played a key role, as the team managed to claw back from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning.
But really, did it need to be this dramatic?
The team had a strong start, with Blake Snell returning and giving up just one run over six innings. Their momentum grew when Mookie Betts, Alex Cole, and Teoscar Hernandez contributed doubles in the seventh inning, breaking a 1-1 tie.
It looked like they were on track for an easy victory.
But once they got two outs, everything fell apart.
Evan Phillips created a bit of chaos in the eighth, allowing three singles after a walk, which tied the game once more.
Then came the most confusing moment: Jack Dryer came in to pitch, and after a routine fly ball to left field, Andy Pages misplayed the ball—letting it slip as he transferred it—and it ended up hitting the wall. Meanwhile, Royals runner Jack Carianone advanced to home, eyeing the winning run.
None of the games in their recent 2-8 stretch felt as much like a gift as this one did.
Despite being in a tough spot, the Dodgers’ lineup fought back.
In the bottom of the eighth, Betts connected for his third hit of the night—a crucial RBI homer that tied the game, adding to his record of homers in 18 consecutive games.
After both teams ended the ninth without scoring, the Dodgers found their victory in the 10th.
Seth Halvorsen debuted as a relief pitcher, managing to withstand pressure in the first half of the inning by leaving a runner on third stranded.
Moments later, the dugout erupted as Muncy delivered with a one-out line drive to right-center field, completing a bases-loaded situation and delivering the team’s first back-to-back wins since late July.
