Dodgers commentators shocked by Phillies’ ongoing baserunning mistakes: ‘What are they doing?’

The Phillies have held the best record in baseball since Don Mattingly took charge, yet they haven’t seemed particularly sharp these last couple of games.

In a tough series against the Dodgers, Philadelphia fell 9-5 on Wednesday, with Bryson Stott getting caught in a base-running mishap in the fifth inning, which once again killed the rally.

Stott, despite the ball being right in front of him, ran directly into third baseman Max Muncy, leading to an easy out that ended the inning.

They failed to bring any runs in during that moment.

“Going down to third place…,” commented Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis. “Muncy and Stott are out. What are they doing?”

“We have no idea,” replied color commentator Orel Hershiser.

With an impressive 47-28 record since Rob Thomson was dismissed and Mattingly took over, one has to wonder about the base running blunders of late.

Philadelphia ended up losing two out of three games against the Dodgers, with their broadcast team expressing frustration over a recent one-run loss, particularly a frustrating double play.

Typically, Stott wouldn’t have made that kind of mistake since he was in a position to score. Getting out at third base in that situation is really unfortunate, especially with the opportunity presented by the hit.

Additionally, players shouldn’t run to third when the ball is in front of them.

To complicate the situation further, their top hitter, Kyle Schwarber, was waiting on deck but ended up popping out, squashing any chance of a further threat.

Mattingly hasn’t been viewed as a poor manager in terms of base running during his time with the Dodgers or Marlins; he’s often critiqued for his bullpen decisions and a tendency to employ small ball strategies too frequently.
