Dodgers All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, experienced every parent’s worst nightmare on Wednesday when they had to take their young son to the emergency room.
Chelsea posted on her Instagram Story on Wednesday that the couple’s 3-year-old son, Maximus, had suffered what she thought was a temporary form of synovitis, which can cause extreme pain and discomfort in the hip joint, and later had to be taken to a local emergency room where Freddie Freeman picked him up after the Dodgers’ 8-3 loss to the rival Giants.
According to Chelsea’s post, Maximus developed the illness after contracting the virus during last week’s MLB All-Star celebrations.
But things seemed to take a turn for the worse, with Chelsea revealing in a follow-up post on Thursday afternoon that she had taken Maximus to the emergency room on Wednesday night after he had stopped eating and drinking and had become “very lethargic.”
Tests and blood tests – Chelsea said little Maximus was “very brave” and didn’t cry during two attempts to give him an IV – all came back negative, meaning he had no infection or virus.
“Everything is consistent with temporary synovitis,” Chelsea wrote in the post, adding that he was released from the hospital at 3:30 a.m. PST. “He is still unable to stand or walk weight-bearing, so we will be monitoring him closely. If there is no improvement within 48 hours, [hours] He needs to go back to the hospital.”
The post included a photo of Freeman lying in a hospital bed with his son.
The Dodgers first baseman returned to the lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Giants to close out a four-game series, but was just one hit in four at-bats.
Freddie and Chelsea Freeman have been married since 2014 and have two children together, Charlie, eight, and Brandon, three.
Chelsea ended her post by praising the hospital staff and thanking everyone for their support.
“There is nothing more painful than seeing my child suffer,” she wrote. “My heart breaks for all the families who have it worse. Thank you for your prayers.”
