Raaw Energy Issues Recall of Dog Food Due to Contamination Risk
Raaw Energy, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of raw pet food, has initiated an extensive recall involving over 180 lots of frozen dog food. This action comes in light of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall was announced in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late last week. It significantly expands upon an earlier advisory from January that initially identified just eight batches.
Recent testing by state agricultural departments produced positive results for Listeria, leading federal regulators to confirm the recall that now affects a range of products produced over several months, raising concerns for both animal and human health.
This updated recall includes all Raaw Energy frozen dog food products made between July 17, 2025, and December 23, 2025, along with an additional batch of its Beef and Turkey Medley manufactured on March 31, 2026.
In total, the action affects more than 60 different varieties of raw food, including popular flavors like Chicken Medley, Turkey Medley, Duck, Salmon, and Pork, among others like “Chips Agility” and “Country Soul.”
These products are usually distributed frozen across nine Eastern states—Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia—primarily through orders placed directly on the company’s website. The recalled items are often packaged in clear plastic tubes, which either weigh two or five pounds, and are sealed with metal clips at both ends, sold in brown cardboard boxes with white labels.
Authorities decided to broaden the recall based on thorough environmental and product testing conducted by agricultural departments in Connecticut and New Jersey.
Investigators initially sampled eight batches following reports of animal illness in Connecticut, all of which tested positive for harmful bacteria. More recent testing identified four additional positive samples from the relevant time frames.
Although Raaw Energy recognized that not every batch produced during the specified period was tested, the company opted for a comprehensive recall out of an abundance of caution, considering untested batches might also be contaminated.
Since the initial advisory, the FDA received additional reports from consumers regarding illnesses in pets linked to the affected products. As a precaution, Raaw Energy has paused all manufacturing activities to review its facility, improve sanitary measures, and take necessary corrective actions.
In a public statement, company representatives mentioned plans to revamp certain areas of their production facility to enhance cleanliness and address sanitation of drains and other critical infrastructure.
To avoid similar issues in the future, the company plans to invest in an advanced pathogen detection system to check every batch before shipment.
Public health officials are warning about the risks of Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious foodborne illnesses in both pets and humans handling the food. Although listeriosis is rare in pets, it can cause a range of symptoms from mild to severe. Affected pets might experience diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, and in some cases, respiratory problems or miscarriages.
Uninfected pets can still carry the bacteria without showing symptoms, which may pose risks to humans through saliva and feces. In humans, exposure can result in nausea, fever, vomiting, and in severe cases, severe infections can occur, affecting the bloodstream and nervous system.
The FDA advises consumers with recalled Raaw Energy products to dispose of them immediately in a secure outdoor trash container, ideally double-bagged, and to thoroughly disinfect all surfaces that may have come into contact with the food.
