Fire Triggered by Dog’s Actions in Maryland Home
In an unusual incident in Maryland, a dog is believed to have accidentally activated a toaster, leading to a fire that resulted in the tragic death of three other pets. Authorities have reported that the fire occurred at a residence on Foxgrove Court in Belcamp, shortly after 5:30 p.m. on a Friday.
Responding firefighters from the Abingdon Fire Company managed to control the blaze within about 20 minutes. Thankfully, no humans were injured, as the homeowner was not present at the time.
Neighbors managed to rescue two of the dogs, but unfortunately, a third dog and two cats perished in the fire. In a bit of good news, the family’s bearded dragon survived after undergoing 24 hours of critical care.
The fire primarily started in the kitchen and moved to other areas of the house. It was revealed that one of the dogs jumped onto the counter, inadvertently turning on the toaster, which ignited combustible materials nearby. Interestingly, the fire’s progression was captured on a Ring security camera, providing evidence that helped officials determine the accidental cause. A deputy state fire marshal confirmed this assessment.
Due to the fire’s intensity, the home experienced extensive damage from flames, smoke, and water. Estimates suggest the structural damage reached around $150,000, with an additional $50,000 damage to personal property.
