A blind dog inadvertently caused a devastating fire in Northern California, destroying a family home and resulting in the deaths of two pets. This incident left a grieving mother and her sons to face the challenge of rebuilding their lives.
The family’s 9-year-old blind German shepherd accidentally activated the stovetop while trying to reach for a box of burrito wrappers, igniting a significant fire that quickly spread across the ceiling and into the attic last Thursday in Rough and Ready. This information was shared through a GoFundMe set up for the family.
“Jody is raising this fundraiser for Martina and her three sons after a devastating house fire destroyed the home… Martina and Jared are separated, but many of Martina’s belongings and the boys’ things were still in the home when the fire happened,” the GoFundMe page noted.
“Thankfully, everyone is safe, but the loss has been overwhelming. Their two beloved dogs sadly did not survive, the kitchen was wrecked, and smoke and soot have permeated the entire house, rendering it unlivable,” the page continued.
Martina’s children also lost most of their belongings, including clothes and toys, in the fire. The GoFundMe aims to help replace essential items, such as clothing, beds, toys, furniture, and other everyday needs, including Martina’s personal items that were in the home.
Currently, the fundraiser has raised $3,000 of its $4,000 target.
In a related incident, another dog in Maryland caused a house fire this past summer by unintentionally turning on a toaster. This unfortunate event resulted in the complete loss of the home and the lives of three pets.
“12 weeks ago we lost it all and walked away with – quite literally – only the clothes we were wearing, nothing else. It is thanks to your help that we managed to eat, buy clothing, and move from the hotel to this apartment and have the necessities,” a different family’s GoFundMe stated.
